Weekend Guide: Howdy, Folks Edition
We say goodbye to September this weekend with the official start of fall in Dallas: The State Fair of Texas. Forget Pumpkin Spice Lattes or the temperature or college football, the Fair is fall.
It’s fair to say that we’re ready to hit the Midway. (Sorry, no more puns.) From all the food to the games to the rides, the fair has all of our favorite things. It makes us feel like kids again, only this time, we can buy as many coupons as we want. What’s the nutritional value of a dozen corny dogs? It’s good, right?
There’s a whole slate of good music this weekend, which you already know about because you follow Allison Collins’ weekly live music lineup. For our money, the best show is Lord Huron at The Bomb Factory. Their latest album, Vide Noir, has taken them to an even more psychedelic dimension, and we expect it to result in quite an interesting live show.
We’d love to hop over to Florence or Venice any time we had a craving for gelato, but who has the time? Thankfully, the Italians have brought the gelato to us with a two-day festival and competition where gelato makers create one-off flavors in hopes of being one of 36 chefs in the world to compete for the title of Gelato Festival World Master. Have the stakes for gelato ever been so high? Seems unlikely.
It seems like only yesterday that we discovered the margarita tap at Truck Yard, and yet, here we are five years later celebrating their wood anniversary. Time flies when you’re at Truck Yard. Because of the margarita tap. Celebrate with a food truck rally (it’s that thing where you buy a $25 ticket and receive a tasting from each truck and vote for your favorite) plus $5 draft beers until 5 PM, live music and an exotic animal petting zoo. Not quite a two-way petting zoo, but we’ll take it.
