Weekend Guide: Post-Labor Day Edition

The nice thing about coming off a Monday holiday is that the weekend gets here even faster. Whether you (and your liver) are quite up for it is something you’ll have to look inward to answer, but rest assured that we have plenty of options to make this weekend fun enough to feel like you’re on vacation — all while staying here in Dallas. See if we’ve got something up your alley below.

For The Person Who Wishes They Were Still in College

If you still revel in your “glory days” on campus, then you’re probably heading out of the office early Friday for some Boulevarding as SMU takes on TCU in the Battle for the Iron Skillet. While TCU is definitely going to win — the Mustangs have been the victor just twice since 2000 — the real battle will be to see who can create the best tailgate on the Boulevard. Dress preppy, sneak a flask and be sure to tell everyone about that sweet road trip you took to Gulf Shores for spring break your sophomore year.

For The TED Talk Lover / Texas Talk Lover

Texas Monthly’s second annual “The Edge of Texas” brings a whole bunch of native and new Texans to Belo Mansion Saturday as TM writers and editors talk with the likes of Tim Ferriss, Dale Hansen, Elizabeth Chambers Hammer and more. With panels including “The Delicious Debate: Pitmasters vs. Chefs,” “The Border: Human Rights & The Law” and “The Uncertain Future of Texas Film,” you’re going to have a full day of Texas topics to digest.

For The Weekend Warrior

It’s getting a little cooler out, but working out before the sun comes up is still the best way to break a sweat while beating the heat. To that end, you should get up really early for HIIT The Plaza with ZYN22 and WFAA Friday morning. We mean getting to Victory Park at 4:45 AM for a free The22 HIIT class that’ll have you ready to take on the world — or crawl back into bed from soreness — plus plenty of free swag from a bunch of vendors. It’ll be fun. Tell us how it goes.

For the Hophead

The 8th Annual Dallas Observer Brewfest takes over the Dallas Farmers Market Saturday evening for dozens upon dozens of breweries near and far. And if you don’t like beer, well, this probably isn’t the event for you, but there will be cider too. Just in time for fall! Come find a new favorite brewery, gaze in jealousy at the beards and contemplate a shoulder tattoo of hops.

For the Good Dog, Yes, You Are

Saturday marks Operation Kindness’ 25th Annual Dog Day Afternoon, which is a time to celebrate all the doggos out there. This free event includes a K9 dog costume, a Mutt Midway and a pet psychic. Yes, an actual, real pet psychic. We see plenty of head scratches and tummy rubs in the future.
